Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums that is mainly due to inadequate oral hygiene. The symptoms of gingivitis that lead the patient to the dentist are bleeding and swelling of the gums and often there is bad breath. The treatment of gingivitis includes the removal of the tartar (stone) with the use of ultrasound devices and then the polishing of the teeth as well as the correct learning of the ways of proper oral hygiene.
Periodontitis is a more severe inflammation of the gums with simultaneous involvement of the bone that surrounds the teeth. Symptoms include bleeding, swollen gums, mobility and tooth movement, and even the loss of seemingly healthy teeth. The treatment includes the deepest cleaning of the teeth with the help of special scrapers and the use of local anesthesia. The treatment of periodontitis requires more than one appointment as well as a re-examination 4-6 weeks after the acute treatment.
